FAQ

Because of the humidity which swells the wood, the floor may start to inflate, resulting in friction between the slats and therefore repeated squeaking. Our first advice is to reduce the humidity level of your home! Although it varies with the seasons (lower in summer and higher in winter), it is recommended in Quebec, that we always maintain the humidity level between 35% and 65%. Also, remember to monitor the temperature of your interior, which must be close to 19 degrees for optimal comfort and stable humidity.
Absolutely! Woodworking includes stairs and floors as well as beams and frames. However, Escaliers Rive-Sud has skilled craftsmen and cabinetmakers to take care of traditional or modern structures: dozens of achievements have already been made in this area, putting ERS's know-how at the service of individuals. These projects included the development of interior decorative beams, as well as tailor-made cabinetmaking mandates. ERS takes care of your interior framing ideas, and even of your external terrace!
Escaliers Rive-Sud offers a comprehensive choice of top quality woods. Wood types with a higher hardness index, such as maple, are typically more resistant to scratches, yet scratches might stand out even more on the lighter shade, the even or closed wood grain of some species. Conversely, the open and pronounced wood grains of some of the softer woods, like oak, offer better camouflage. In short, it is best to choose the wood type you like most, while opting for a matt varnish to make marks and scratches less visible.
Each type of wood has its own colour, grain, and unique vein patterns. You have to make your own decision based on personal taste and preference. Reflecting on the impression you want to make should also help (certain wood types project classic beauty, some look exotic, natural, warm or sophisticated); then verify that it will blend well into your design, keeping in mind that a staircase will be a key element of your home decor for a very long time. It all depends on what floor covering you install. Ideally, a staircase should be installed after ceramic floors are done, but with all other floor covering (hardwood, laminates, etc.), it is preferable to build your staircase first. As for painting, it is best to install it after the sealer and/or primer, but before the finishing coats.
Of course! We can supply homeowners with all staircase components (newels, balusters, handrails, stair treads and risers, etc.), with our without installation, in an infinite variety of colours. And, because stairs naturally end on floors, ERS also offers a huge selection of hardwood and laminate flooring products, in various grades and thicknesses. Installation is also an option.
Building a staircase has to be done on site, inside your house, since it requires many cuts and painstaking adjustments for a perfect fit. Our professional installers and carpenters will set up a small workshop, approximately 8 by 10 feet, at the bottom of the projected staircase. Despite our precautions, building a staircase cannot be done without creating a lot of dust. Hence, we ask for your cooperation to create suitable conditions. Cover your furniture and keep the doors shut, for instance, to limit dust propagation.

Wood flooring quality is not measured by its thickness first, but rather by the AC hardness rating of the wear coat. International standard hardness ratings for laminate floors are known the AC rating (AC1 to AC5). AC3 and up indicates a high density, more durable product. Another clue to the quality of wood flooring is the variety of patterns printed. Less repetition leaves a more natural impression.
Sorry, but we only install brand new products. For renovation projects, try contacting floor finishing specialists.
It depends mostly on the type of staircase being built. A typical, conventional staircase will take about two weeks from the initial measuring, through production and on-site installation.
